Keep on Keepin' on!
So, no posts for a few weeks due to a deady combination of busyness and lazyness.
What have I been up to?
Reading:
- Lost Civilizations of the Stone Age - pretty dull on the surface but great for letting your brain chew over the implications of humans being "Human" for far longer than is generally thought
- Autobiography of Malcolm X - Superb book. A racist in a racist society, very driven, passionate guy who was searching for his own truth, tragically he seemed to be about to find it before being cut down
Fitbaw:
- Edinburgh City:4 - Gala Farydean:1 - Total travesty of a result for Gala, they were playing well but got caught by the sucker punch twice and missed some gilt edge chances of their own.
- Scotland -Italy: Euan got me a ticket to that - superb!
Fringe:
- Tommy Tiernan - (***) pretty good show but the guy has some serious, serious issues.
Really raw, very introspective and pretty uncomfortable at times i.e. when he talks about cheering on his parents shagging through the wall or about laughing at funerals - Jump - (****) Martial Arts and Slapstick. Very funny and very very well done.
Concert
- Faithless - Went last night at Princes St Gardens and it was ok. I'm not a huge fan but some of their stuff was really good - "God is a DJ" and "We got one" being the best I think BUT it was only an hour and a quarter - pretty crap value for a £25 ticket. However, was brilliant to catch up with Joss and we managed to blag our way through to the "wristband only" bit at the front of the stage.
Phew!
Spectaculary Dull Gym Post
Have been to the gym a grand total of twice now and actually enjoying it more than I thought.
Barring burning my leg in the steam room(!), it's been pretty painless.
Workout at the moment is:
10 mins cycle (R8 & >65rpm)
10 mins Rower (R10 > 30 spm)
10 mins treadmill (7.0)
2 sets of 15 reps at 4 for most machines except leg press where it goes to 6.
3 x 30 sit ups
2 x 15 squats
2 x 15 bicep curls @ 7
2 x 15 tricep curls @ 5
Went last night and couldn't believe that there was a tv prog on smelly cheese when I was slogging away on the rower. I LOVE cheese and was all for packing up and heading to the nearest cheesemonger and to hell with excercise.
Anyway, the reason for this spectaculary dull post? I just want to see if I improve over the coming months or if I would have been as well staying home with crackers and stilton.
Big Brother

K is watching Big Brother just now - seriously, what a pile of utter crap.
4 no marks and the "crazy frog" screaming "oh my gawd!" at each other.
Must be something in the water.....
After talking and talking and talking and talking about it, I've finally sent off for the first couple of modules to do an MBA.
I went for it for a couple of reasons:
1) Unhappy with my original degree - If I'd actually worked at it I'd have got a lot better mark
2) The course seems really interesting and should be directly applicable to what I am doing / want to do.
AND
I joined a Gym as well!
I tried to get back into jogging but without a "target" to aim for I just couldn't be bothered.
Since I'll be paying a monthly fee I guarantee I'll be going at least three times a week to get my money's worth.
Shit, I must be getting "yuppified" or something, I spent part of Saturday in Ikea FFS! :-(
Ach well, I'll worry when I turn veggie, take up squash/golf and hanker after a silver German car.
Armed Police at Haymarket
At the risk of turning this into a transport blog, it was a bit of a shock to see armed Police at Haymarket this morning.
It's the first time I've ever seen armed police on routine duty (except for within an airport).
I guess it won't be the last time eithier but it just seems really "un-British".
The funny thing is, as a Scotsman, I don't feel particularly British nor could I easily define "Britishness" but... I think most people would be able to decide what isn't British. And Police dressed in black toting machine guns isn't.
The other thing is, how are normal police duties being carried out? They must be even more overstreched than usual or are they forced to let the thugs, ned's and junkie's get on with terrorising folk and the government will just fix the crime figures as usual?
